What do you think is the most important issue facing young people today, and why ?

In the present era, young people face an array of pressing issues, but one issue stands out as particularly significant: the mental health crisis. With rising rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders among the youth, it is crucial to understand the gravity of this challenge and its profound impact on the well-being and future of young individuals. This essay explores why mental health has emerged as the most important issue facing young people today.

The mental health crisis among young people has reached alarming levels. Academic pressure, societal expectations, economic uncertainty, and the influence of social media contribute to heightened stress levels, leading to anxiety and depression. The transition from adolescence to adulthood is often marked by significant changes and challenges, further exacerbating mental health issues. Moreover, the stigma surrounding mental health often prevents young people from seeking help, compounding the problem and hindering their overall development and potential. The mental health crisis has detrimental consequences for the academic and personal growth of young individuals. Mental health issues can impede concentration, memory, and cognitive abilities, hindering academic performance. Persistent feelings of sadness, low self-esteem, and anxiety can affect social interactions, relationships, and the development of vital life skills. Untreated mental health problems during adolescence can have long-lasting effects, compromising educational attainment, career prospects, and overall life satisfaction. Addressing the mental health crisis necessitates the establishment of comprehensive support systems. Educational institutions, healthcare providers, families, and communities must prioritize mental health awareness, prevention, and intervention. Increased access to mental health services, counseling, and resources is crucial to support young people in managing their mental well-being effectively. Moreover, destigmatizing conversations around mental health and promoting self-care, resilience, and coping mechanisms can empower young individuals to seek help and thrive despite the challenges they face.

The mental health crisis is undoubtedly the most significant issue confronting young people today. By acknowledging the severity of this challenge, we can work towards creating a supportive environment that prioritizes mental well-being. Through early intervention, awareness campaigns, and accessible mental health services, we can equip young individuals with the tools they need to overcome mental health obstacles and foster a generation of resilient, thriving individuals.

    Tell It to the Skies

Lydia and Valerie were still young children when a double tragedy hit their family. Their father was killed in an accident and when their mother was unable to cope with life she threw herself in front of a train whilst the girls slept on the railway embankment. Their only family was their grandparents whom they had never met, but it was to their home that they were taken.

Deeply religious, the grandparents had disowned their son when he married the girls’ mother and there was no joy or love in taking on the two orphans. Their grandfather was cruel and unfeeling and the grandmother only had affection for the younger sister, Valerie. Trapped in a loveless home and forced to attend an extreme church, Lydia finds that her only friend is Noah Solomon whom she meets at school. Still filled with guilt about her mother’s death, Lydia trusts few people but her affection for Noah grows steadily.

Twenty-eight years later Lydia has made her home in Venice where she lives with her step-daughter. The sight of a face in the crowds which reminds her of Noah causes her to fall and injure herself. It’s also the beginning of a physical and emotional journey which takes her back to England to resolve the mysteries of the past she thought she had left behind.

Regular readers of Erica James will find this to be a darker tale than those which have preceded it. It touches on child cruelty, mental illness, suicide and murder and they’re all an intrinsic part of the story. None of the details are too harrowing, although I did think that the story of Lydia’s childhood was perhaps a little long. It’s certainly a departure for the author and shows that she is capable of more than a light story.

It’s not a predictable story either. There are some neat twists in the tale which I didn’t expect and the plot is clever enough that there’s no point at which you need to suspend disbelief. I really warmed to Lydia and the grandparents were sufficiently repulsive to be interesting without being over-the-top. Noah was well drawn. I had my doubts about Valerie at times, but the denouement put all my worries to rest.

How has social media influenced our behavior and relationships ?

In recent years, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, transforming the way we communicate, interact, and perceive the world. While social media platforms have brought numerous benefits, they have also exerted a profound influence on our behavior and relationships. This essay explores the ways in which social media has shaped our behavior patterns and impacted our interpersonal connections.

Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate, providing instant and widespread connectivity. However, this convenience has come at a cost. Online interactions often lack the nuances of face-to-face communication, leading to misinterpretation and misunderstanding. The brevity of messages on platforms like Twitter and Snapchat encourages superficial interactions, diminishing the depth and quality of communication. Moreover, the constant availability of social media can lead to addiction and increased screen time, reducing real-life social interactions and leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Social media platforms often present an idealized version of people’s lives, creating a distorted perception of reality. Individuals often curate their profiles to showcase the highlights of their lives, leading to a culture of comparison and self-doubt. This constant exposure to carefully crafted images and narratives can erode self-esteem and contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. The pressure to conform to societal standards and gain social validation through likes and followers can negatively impact individuals’ self-worth and behavior. Social media has both positive and negative effects on relationships. On one hand, it allows individuals to connect with friends and family across distances, strengthening existing bonds. It also facilitates the formation of new relationships and communities based on shared interests. However, social media can also strain relationships, as constant online presence may lead to decreased privacy, jealousy, and mistrust. Moreover, the emphasis on superficiality and instant gratification can undermine the depth and authenticity of relationships, as genuine emotional connections are often replaced with virtual interactions.

Social media has undeniably influenced our behavior and relationships, bringing both advantages and challenges. While it has expanded our social networks and provided unprecedented connectivity, it has also introduced new complexities and risks. It is crucial to be mindful of the impact of social media on our behavior, prioritize meaningful connections, and strike a healthy balance between online and offline interactions to foster genuine relationships and overall well-being.

Book smarts or street smarts ?

The debate between street smart and book smart individuals has persisted for ages, each side arguing the superiority of their own intellectual prowess. However, the reality is that both types of intelligence possess unique strengths and together contribute to a well-rounded individual. In this essay, we will explore the advantages of both street smart and book smart individuals and shed light on the importance of striking a balance between the two.

Book smart individuals thrive on their strong academic foundation. Their extensive knowledge and understanding of various subjects enable them to navigate complex theories, solve intricate problems, and innovate. These individuals excel in structured environments such as classrooms and laboratories, where critical thinking and analytical skills are highly valued. Book smart individuals have the ability to process vast amounts of information, enabling them to make well-informed decisions based on research and evidence. Their intellectual curiosity drives them to explore new ideas, expand their horizons, and contribute to the development of society. The Wisdom of Street Smart (approximately 100 words): Street smart individuals possess a different kind of intelligence rooted in real-world experiences and practicality. They have a keen understanding of human nature, adaptability, and the ability to navigate complex social situations. Street smart individuals often possess excellent problem-solving skills and are quick to think on their feet. They have a deep sense of intuition and are adept at reading people and situations, enabling them to make swift decisions even in ambiguous circumstances. Street smart individuals possess valuable skills that cannot be learned solely from books, allowing them to succeed in real-life scenarios where practicality and interpersonal skills matter most. The Importance of Balance: Rather than engaging in an either-or debate, the true value lies in finding a balance between street smart and book smart qualities. By combining book smarts with street smarts, individuals can enjoy the benefits of both worlds. The academic knowledge gained through book smarts provides a strong foundation, while street smarts offer the ability to apply that knowledge in practical and adaptive ways. By seeking a balance, individuals can make informed decisions based on research, while also relying on their intuition and experience to navigate real-world challenges effectively. Such individuals are equipped to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.

In the quest for personal growth and success, it is essential to recognize the complementary nature of street smart and book smart intelligence. Instead of emphasizing one over the other, a harmonious integration of both types of intelligence allows individuals to develop a holistic approach towards problem-solving, decision-making, and overall life satisfaction.

    Dear Rona,

My first day at the Herricks Junior High here in Sandy, Utah was a weird one. Everyone knew each other, and I was like an alien from outer space. After having spent seven years in classes with you in Miami, I have to adjust to a new state, a new city, a new neighborhood, and a new school!

To be perfectly frank, I hesitate to guess how I’ll manage to survive because I really miss you and the whole gang back in sunny Florida. You and I always talked about swimming and scuba diving but here all the kids are into skiing. I’m sure that I’ll dread my first time on the big slopes because I have a tendency to fear new experiences. To start with, I’ll have to swap my swim gear for down jackets, mittens, and ear muffs. Brrr!

Back to Herricks Jr. High. We have only 140 kids in this less than urban school where there is absolutely no need for a security guard. A quick glimpse of my program reveals that I have five major subjects, including French. In addition, ma cherie, I have Phys. Ed. three times a week, plus Computer Lab., Home Eco. (we made jello the first day!) and Music. It’s obvious I won’t have time to loaf.

There is a Senior Prom and a class trip to Los Angeles, if I can get my Mom to consent. I have to conclude this letter now because they gave me a ton of homework.

What I’m really thinking — The Intern

I’ve just started my third internship. At the end of it, I will have been working unpaid for a year. It feels as though I’m not in control of my own life, that I’m helpless. Academic qualifications and work experience are almost irrelevant when you’re competing against people who have years of experience, many of whom are taking a step down the career ladder. I’m not choosy — I’ve spent time in a children’s charity, events management, a press office — but they haven’t got me a permanent contract. It’s demoralizing. And exhausting — job-hunting is a full-time occupation. After clocking off, most people can be free for the night. For the intern, it’s time to go home and look for work. I have no idea how many positions I’ve applied for since graduating, but it’s more than 100.

    Every Last Word

In Every Last Word, Samantha “Sam” McAllister lives her life with a secret. She has Purely-Obsessional OCD, a mental illness that causes her to live a life plagued with dark thoughts and obsessive behaviors. She doesn’t want her “perfect” friends to know about her internal battle, so she hides behind a face of makeup and confidence.

When Sam meets Caroline, a quirky classmate she’s never noticed before, things begin to look up. Caroline introduces Sam to Poet’s Corner, an underground poet society created for the school’s misfits and outcasts. As Sam begins to write out her feelings, she begins to find her voice.

Sam makes new friends along the way, including a guitar-playing love interest and a girl who writes poetry on food wrappers. Sam feels like she fits into the group. She spends less time questioning her sanity and starts to feel more “normal” than she does with her popular friends. But just when things seem to fall into place, Sam is faced with new information that makes her question everything.
